Europeans give up holiday travel as austerity bites

Fewer Europeans are planning to go away for a summer holiday as economic austerity bites, a new study shows, with levels of foreign vacation travel at their lowest for eight years.

No more than 54 percent of Europeans are planning to get away for summer holiday this year, according to the Ipsos-Europ Assistance "holiday barometer" published Thursday.
Europ Assistance Group CEO Martin Vial said there was "a clear correlation between the intensity of the slump and holiday intentions".

Unsurprisingly the countries with the highest unemployment rates were the worst hit.
"The scope of the crisis in Spain and Italy is particularly visible in departure plans," the report said, with fewer than one in two Spaniards planning to leave on holiday this summer and little more than half of Italians.
Due to "less tense" economic and social situations the departure plans for Germans and Austrians had stabilised, according to the study.

For the first time since the economic crisis began, the French are particularly affected this year, it said.
While 62 percent of them say they want to leave on holiday this year, this is still eight points down on last year and the lowest rate since 2005.

At least the stay-at-home French can comfort themselves on remaining in the leading destination chosen by Europeans.

The country is set this year to welcome 18 percent of European tourists, the study says, followed closely by Italy with Spain, on 14 percent, in third place.

The Internet and social networks are being used more than ever for vacation preparations, with the British holidaymakers most active on the Internet, followed by the Belgians, French and Germans.
The British have also retained their enthusiasm for foreign travel, being the only country studied where the intentions to leave on a summer holiday are going up this year, from 51 percent to 56 percent.
Ipsos conducted the study talking to a total of 4,048 Europeans from Austria, Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

  1. Even if Air Seychelles introduce direct flights, the impact of tourism in Seychelles will be the same. You cannot fly empty Aircraft from European cities to Mahe. You need to fill them up with passengers. We have been there before with Air Seychelles and they went bankrupt. As stated in this article, people in Europe have less money to spend because of austerity measures by the European Union and the United Kingdom. The Russians are in the same situation due to economic sanctions imposed by the western countries and the fall of oil and gas prices in the world market. Ste Ange promotion of Seychelles will not change the situation. It is a waste of time and money.

  2. All tourist destinations have seen a decli.ed of french visitors to their shores this years. However, france provide an important of visitors,e.g to mauritius this ,,a total of 118.862 visitors, which is still an important figure.

In contrast to france, mauritius saw an increase of german visitors 2.9%,follows by Uk,switzerland, autrja etc. Total european visitors to mauritius this 266,295 making 50% of total number of arrjval to mauritius this year.Still considerable figure, isnot it?One reason why,e.g mauritius saw an increase of swjss visitors this year is due to the fact that theSwissCharter Airline which also owes o.e of Europe biggest TravelAgency KUONI Travel operates djrect flights..twice a week to maurtjus, djto to Virgin airline when it comes to brit visitors.
Do not tell us Condkr decjded twice weekly to seychelles because europeans are not traveling..no company will do that for would alost. All seems to do. With the stragy.while mUrjtius, maldives have successfully allowed chater ajrljnes connextion to their shores,pl has, fajled to do so.while bexause of recession in europe mUrtius government has worked with ajrlines, hotels, travel agencIes to get prices dexreaE to Ttract europeNs because of the recession, which is periodic deal that jntil recessjon js over,se,chelles government hS provided no alternatives.eg if Ajrsey because of lack of europeans to fill seats is not interstng for the airline,it has not even trjed to e.g opearte a seasonal djrect flight that durjng our high season only to europe(europe does not mea.s france,it could have been german as mauritius stTistic of arrival show keeps increasing

  11. The benefits of hub and spoke system are well-known,they permit indirect connections between city, country pairs that ,by themselves, cannot generate enough traffick to justify direct flights. The need to make transfers at these hubs, however, posses additional uncertainty.time and cost on travelers,----Resort destiantions that can only be reached though a Hub become Less attractive. For this reasons,as we saw when St Ange went to Paris to negociate with French Travel agencies,--TOurist offficlas often lobby for good reasons, the local governemnts to invest inairport infrastructure to accommodate Direct lfgihts better etc...
Many Known International Experts such as Mark P Hampton and Julia Jeyacheva( Book:Tourism and inclusive Growth in Small Island developing State--they also comment of Etohad/Airsey sharecode and Not having Direct flight to the island)said that on Seychelles actual Air Connectivity"Betwwen 95 and 96 percent of tourist enter Seychelles by Air.The dependence of Air is not unbcommon to SIDS,but it does carry risks.Air Seychelles now operates under Etihad,as a result of the Seychelles government sale of 40 percent to the Air(Eithad). In dept Interviews with Hoteliers(Intenrational and local)and local Travel agencies In may 2012 indicated that traditional markets.like FRANCe,are LESSS LIKELY to book,a holiday to a destination to which there are NO DIRECT FLIGHTS.Measures have been taken to attract Tourists from other markets, particularly the Chinese,).Now,how an Airline attract passengers to book its airline in order to fill up seats ,it is all in the market strategy--often a combination of having Intenrational travel agencies working with Airlines, hotels and other tourist services like Car rental, boat charters ,local travel agencies to provide an interesting package which make it cheaper than booking for instance, only flight ticket and hotel room separately etc...CONDOR is a good example of that--the airline is most of the time fully booked ,and demand seems to growth that Condor is about to operate twice a week direct flight to Seychelles.

  13. ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS IN TODAY'S TOURISM MARKET IS THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION THAT CONSUMERS NOW HAVE AT THEIR FINGERTIPS .. LITERALLY .. IT'S NOT EASY FOR ANY DESTINATION TO EXERT THE TYPE OF MARKET SHARE THEY HAD BEFORE INTERNET ACCESS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR MOST TOURISTS TO COMPARE DESTINATIONS IN WHAT HAS COME TO CLOSELY MIMIC THE "PERFECT MARKET" IDEAL OF TEXTBOOK ECONOMICS .. THE FIRST "SPANNER IN THE WORKS" ..
THE SECOND PROBLEM RELATES TO A WIDE RANGE OF RANDOM ELEMENTS THAT CAN DERAIL EVEN THE BEST CONCEIVED FORECAST OF MARKET CONDITIONS .. PARTICULARLY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE POWDER KEG OF MIDDLE EASTERN GEOPOLITICS .. THE RISE OF ISIS .. SECTARIAN CONFLICT IN IRAQ .. THE GENOCIDE IN SYRIA .. THE UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF AFGHANISTAN .. THAT'S THE SECOND "SPANNER IN THE WORKS" ..

  14. Right, there is no doubt Aviaition marketing has becme increasely sophisticate during the last decade.Fo instance, the democratization of aivivation market data meant that brokers and dealers would need to have acompeling brand to to differentiate themselves from their competitiors.etc...The good news is that interlilent marketing effort can end up becoming the investment with the highest ROI a company makes. But without careful attention ,poorly executed market can up costing millionsnot just in expenses but missing opportunities.

In a highly competitive marketplace,it is tempting for companies to try being everything to everyone. But that is a one way ticket into the shark -infested waters that turned a company's service into merely a commodity.
One important most crucial component of marketing is consistency of message and visuals.

  16. On BLUE ECONOMY--Pl teels us that it has prepared in details a good paln to better manage our EEZ.Good new,but it must be noted that civil society did not participate nor have seen the content of this plan ,dictates on them by Morgan.

As to potential Oil existence,Te Australian experts have confirmed the present of oil in our EZZ.As to Pl it has joined EITI but on national level nothing has been put in aplce to:
Fiscal r managing policies of oil revenues
    -oil and external management
    -Public investment planning
    -Establishemnt of Petroluem FUND
-Legal framework for the Petroluem Fund
    -Deposits and withdrawal of fund
    -Civil society oversight,checks and balances
-accountability and transparency of government operations
    _üublishing government agreements and deals
    -Encumbrances
-Auditing and accounting of oil revenue
-How oil revenues would be use and save for future genrations
    -Investment and petroleum Funds proceed
    -Responsibilites of central bank
    -Asset management practices
    -Responsibilites of the advisory Committeee
    -etc..etc..etc..

One important thing is--that oil revenue should never be control by government but by independence bodies which includes Ngos,Civil societies, indepedent committees etc...

  17. In Seychelles fresh drinking water supply is becoming scare due to increase of development ,expats etc.... But do you know that Seychelles has aquafiers that is underground /undersea fresh water wells that could help solve our water supply shoratege.

For instance,At FEGATE ISLAND "the lacour plateau coastal plian rgouhly about 1000 M along the sea front and 350 meters deep and totaling about 20 hectares.Studied made in the past ,showed that this Aquifer can be pumped at the required 30 M cubic/d with an estimate long-term sustainable yield of 60 m cubic/d .And there are more of such underground/undersea wells In Seychelles waters that should be search for immediate or future use.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This Aquifer is reserved for the Savy brothers aka THE ROYAL FAMILY.
If it was oil,Dick Chenny and Halliburton would be there long time.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You right. What I am trying tzo show here is that we should just as search for oil look also of this potential vital to a country and the thing is that experts have proven that underground /undersea bed fresh water reserves exceed the amount of water used in the 20 th century world wide ,and the estimate amount is 90 percent of fresh water reserves are beneath the Ocean.

My blood boiled when I heard Miriton A minister teeling a group of fathers "he would do everything to help solve gender abuses"Well Dr Meriton one effective and uncostly way to do it is to "Make domestic violence a crime Donkey"Alone it would solve, impede and reduce domestic violence ,It is not by making speeches on gendervoilence that abuse would stop but by real actions both at community level,by law and by educations and having parents take their moral responsibility. It is ture that the later due to the soci-economic sitituation they need have made their parental responsibility less important. What to to eat,how to feed their kids and survive Pl daily hardship has become their priority.Deal with drag problem affect ting more and more families, umeployment, acoholism, poverty etc ..all these things pl have to dlevier on.But most importantly ,Meriton ,is to get a law passed that CRIMINALIZE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE--I assure you, many abusers before acting would think twice of the consequences would do otherwise.
