Egyptian court upholds death penalty imposed on three Seychelles nationals

The highest Court of Appeal in Egypt has upheld the death penalty imposed on three Seychellois nationals convicted of drug trafficking, the Seychelles Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) says it has learnt today.
In a press statement issued this afternoon, MFA said the three men who are currently being detained in Egypt’s Qena prison have lost their appeal against the death sentence imposed on them last year.
Ronny Norman Jean, Yvon John Vinda and Dean Dominic Loze were sentenced to death by execution on April 7, 2013, the sentence was confirmed on June 3, 2013.
Ever since the death sentence was imposed on the three Seychellois nationals, the Seychelles government had been appealing to the Egyptian government to commute their sentences to life imprisonment.
“Although it is the government’s policy to respect the sovereignty and judicial process in other countries, it nevertheless upholds the rights of its citizens to a fair trial. To this end, whilst reassuring the Egyptian authorities of its “zero tolerance” policy against drug trafficking, the Government wrote in 2013 to the Egyptian to appeal for a fair trial and the avoidance of capital punishment which does not exist in our legal system,” reads the MFA statement issued this afternoon.
“In the same vein, the Government took all measures practical and feasible to ensure that the Seychellois obtained the required legal and consular representation.”
The decision made known today implies that execution orders will now follow. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not specify if a date had been set for the sentence to be applied.
Executions are usually carried out by hanging in Egypt.
In spite of the recent development the archipelago’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have made known the government’s intention to continue negotiating with the Egyptian authorities on the matter.
“…..the Government is not relenting in its efforts to pursue all possible diplomatic and legal avenues in consultation with the Egyptian authorities to avert the death penalty,” concludes the MFA statement.
The three Seychellois men were arrested on April 22, 2011 by the Egyptian police onboard a boat near the Red Sea coastal town of Marsa Alam. They were together with a British national identified as Charles Raymond Ferndale, who is said to be the owner of the vessel and another Pakistani national.
They were accused and charged for attempting to smuggle three tonnes of hashish, worth almost £3million, in 118 bags into Egypt.
It is believed that the drugs found in the South African flagged vessel originated from Pakistan.
All five men were sentenced to death, but the Pakistani national was said to have fled the scene and was sentenced in absentia.

  7. Hanging is a terrible way to die, even for a drug trafficker.
Jean Paul Adam should seek leniency and ask that they simple be shot with a firing squad. It is much quicker and much more painless.
It is the least he can do after failing to secure a life sentence.

  9. How come Michel was able to get a pardon for his son on death row in Singapore and can't do the same for these 3. He gifted Khalifa in return for his son freedom our dignity as a sovereign country. Now Seychelles belongs to Kalifa. We are all paying for his son's freedom. His sister was pardon in the Seychelles jail as well for drug trafficking. The least he can do is get these 3 men sentence reduced to 10 or 15 years since they did commit the crime and need to pay for it. Just like his son got his sentence reduced to 8 years instead of the gallows do the same for these people James Michel

  10. A lesson for Pp Government to learn that sometimes democracy can be useful.
If the people of Seychelles were allowed to demonstrate against the death penalty on the public row! The world have been aware of the plight of their three citizens on death row!
It is not too late for the gutless to come on the road and show solidarity against death penalty and beg for clemency through international media, and we shall see if Pp government backs their concern.

  11. Hanging is a barbaric way to be punished. Life sentence shouldne pleaded by Seychelles government.
If that fails, which it will likely, method of death must be pleaded to be as humane as possible.

  14. It seems Pl regime has long forgotten the three Seychellois jailed in Egypt.May be because execution is not seen by Pl butcher Michel as a brutal means of exterminating people as he himself has exterminated his own people cold blooded. In other words,Michel the Butcher does not feel execution is wrong,he might even find fun seeing his own people executed.

Family members should unite and through NGOS(those USA just bail out with million of dollars and supposedly NGOS fighting for Human rights,Prisoners etc..)should get pro-active in order to put pressure of Michel the butcher regime to do more to get our three young men back home. This could start by sending a petition for action by Pl and if nothing is done that satisfy families and NGOS a peaceful protest of support to victims should not be over rule. The lesson we learnt through the years as SFP has proudly demonstatered is that "If you want to get Pl thugs off the backside and get thing done you need to insert breathless pressure the one-party state else nothing at all will be done.

We donot really know the real story.Where the three Seychellois aware that the ship they in was teemed with drugs?or were they only scapegoats ?We have seen such scenario palyed in the case of Hoarua case whereby it seems crew members were victims of organized crimes and be made scapegoat for Hoarua in order tzhat the alter can operate his drug trafficking transportation without directly getting involve himself.Whne he was apprehended under ,suddenly it were the crew who were first made culprits but after crew refuted all invovlemnt and porbably Hoarua was being clearing becoming the real culprit ,Govinden a Hoarua friend and complice made all possible by raping our justice system to get his friend hoarau out of the risk of being identify as drug trafficker better also from facinf prison sentences. It would have been a big blow for Pl for hoarau is an active Pl member.

  22. The Capital sentence of the three Seychellois in Egypt was pronounced following trials laden and procedural flaws.this includes a lack of precision in the charges, limited access to lawyers, trials in absentia, and mass sentencing.

Eygypt has a traditional of executing its people as a means to silence political oppostions ,it has become a national sport.

We must say ,that Pl has not been pro-active in negociating with Egyptian new government to get out our three Nationals out of this hell.Pl seems to be arguing on the basisis of"We donot have capital sentence in Seychelles"We not in Seychelles Pl,Egy<pt is a sovereign country with its own laws. What Pl should be doing in engaging Intenrational organization such as Amnesty Intenrational Huamn Rights,Arab Leagues,Michel despots Arab Friends who are also friends and sponsor of Al SISSI government that including the USA,African organizations.Pl government should finds deal accepted by Egypt government such as extradiction, that the three Seychellois can purge their rest of the setences in Seychelles prison, including pay bribes to the Egyptian dictator who is greedy like Michel when it come from pocketing bribes.A bribes for once to save three lives is worse than bribes paid to pl crooks.

  30. We donot need nice letter when the lives of three apparently innocent citizens is on balance,What we need in pro-active interventions by government through international organizations such as Amnesty International,Human Rights bodies both International and In Egypt ,inclucing African Union,etc.. to ensure that our citizens are not butchered for crimes which cannot really be proven Egypt court to be imminent.

Governemnt could have gatherted its own investigations to provide counter-arguments to that of Egytian courts
-Instead of drinking wine at White House and performing a puppet show,Michel could had used his little opportunity to Engage Mr Obama government in helping to get our three Nationals out of this hell.

Gorvernment could have proposed --that the three condemned could continue their terms in Sey prisons--
Beg SISSI to consider for amnesty when this is done often by Egyptain government on Egytian Independence day.

    etc..etc..etcc

Michel government has done nothing so far .

  33. The crime cannot be proven in a convincing way,and knowing Eghyptain corrupt justice system nothing convivncing can prove that the Three Seychellois were either victims nor culprit.NO representative be it National or Intenrational were present during the speditive trial.Little is known for instance about the lawyer/s who defended them----picked up by state etc...There is lots of dark spots in this case and we cannot and should not allow Egyptain dictatorship to put the lives of our people in jeopardy as its does to its own people in a system of injustice and untransparency.

PL should immediately stopped preaching about"Seychelles does not have capital sentence"As if Egyptian as sovereign State should do as Seychelles or implememnt Seychelles Alw.Egypt is sovereign Donkeys. What you should be doing instead is engage regional neighbor countries,Afircna Union,Arab leagues,Intenratinal organizations, and direct and pro-active through diplomatic means to get our citizens out of Egyptain gulag.Noting oalso ,that no Seychellis has ever committed any crimes against the Egyptian Nation on its territories etc,... since its existence, therefore that this case need more than the speditive Egyptain justice style system but consideration OF THESE FACTS.

  37. Frankly, not because of PL,i consider TAZAR a well-trained special forces, due to the fact that we are lucky to have long historical friends Like USA,Euroepan who have always help eager to help us.Seychelles,is bless, for having so many Western Nations having good relation to the Seychellois people(Not necessarily to Pl thugs). Many countires in Africa and around the world dream of having the benfit from western special forces be it training etc......some are even jealous. These conctacts must be pamper and continue .I would argue that In Africa, though TAZAR was created a few years ago,Seychelles special forces in one of the best in Africa though I still believe that they still have not been well-equipped that is with high-techs which should be the case for a small Nation. For instance,TAZAR lacks communications tools for each soldier,Night goggles for each man, better riffles Not Ak 47)etc....

These guys in Tazar as other mary units are patriots who want to give their lives to defence the country, they did not chose ther army because of Pl or to defence PP though Michel and ilks might think so,but solely joined the army by patriotism rather than ideology.
